Bob's Rules: #1 Show Up

| | Comments (0)

I have been doing a lot of thinking about resolutions, as I'm sure many of you have, and one that keeps resonating is, "Don't wait to start." I was listening to Mur Lafferty's I Should Be Writing podcast, and she brought this up. If you want to do something - do it. Just start. It's something Erisa has always said, and I totally agree with in theory, but the problem I always have is how. How do I start?

This leads me to what I'm hoping to build as a set of rules for my personal GTD (see 43folders).

Rule #1

Show up.

That's it. Just show up. At the page, at the gym, at a yoga class. Your first action is to get your butt there. Surprisingly it's one of the hardest for me. Once I'm at the page, gym, yoga class, I'm fine, but the process of dragging my sorry-@ss to that class is like an uphill battle. Which lead me to thinking - what am I missing? How am I making this harder than it needs to be?

The answer I came up with is to plan showing up. Know in advance that if you are going to a 6 am class, don't stay up working on a project until 2 am. These are painfully obvious, but something I miss ALL THE TIME.

Plan your work, work your plan, and above all, show up.
